2021 Summer Service Workers

Gloria Arroyo

Hello! My name is Gloria and I grew up in California. I am passionate about mental health and taking away the stigma around mental disorders/illnesses, empowering marginalized communities, helping low-income families and schools, and journeys for self-discovery and growth. My goal right now is to focus on my undergraduate studies, then go for my graduate degree, so that I can teach higher education. I have chosen to work with La Verne Church of Brethren because of the opportunity for spiritual growth and, more than anything, to contribute to the wonderful youth leadership programs it has, such as peace camp.

Elvira Gonzalez

Hello! My name is Elvira Gonzalez, and I am from Ontario, California. I am currently a senior at the University of La Verne. I am working towards my undergraduate degree for a Bachelor of Science in psychology. Once I have completed my degree, my next goal is to finish with a Master Degree in sport and performance therapy. When I am done with school, I plan on becoming a sport and performance therapist. I have always been heavily involved in an active lifestyle as I played volleyball for thirteen years and have been coaching for about six years. It is my dream to work for a major sports league team or a college athletic department with the degree(s) I obtain in the future. On a more personal level I enjoy gardening, creating jewelry, reading, and hiking. This will be my second year in the Summer Service program, and I am excited to be working with La Verne Church of the Brethren peace camp. I chose this particular site because I enjoy working and learning from groups of people who are part of a community. I felt that La Verne Church of the Brethren would be a perfect opportunity to learn something new from a community I have been a part of for a while. I also love working with children/youth as I have come to find out that not only do I have the pleasure of teaching them valuable lessons in life, but they have always managed to teach me something that I cannot learn anywhere else. I have noticed that my calling was to serve my community, and I take so much pride in finding ways that I can extend a helping hand to others that need my help. I am very blessed and honored to be working with La Verne Church of the Brethren this summer!
