How can we effectively dialogue with neighbors and family who use the Bible as a weapon against others? And why bother?
These are questions addressed in the one-person show, “Waking Up from a Biblically Induced Coma”, written & performed by Peterson Toscano. After spending much of his adult life as an Evangelical Christian, Peterson Toscano eventually came out gay and questioned EVERYTHING he believed. He has emerged as a gay Christian and an internationally recognized Bible scholar.
Using the same texts that once oppressed him, he now speaks out about sexism, immigration rights, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) concerns. He is one of the foremost experts on gender non-conformists in the Bible and presents at seminaries, conferences, universities, and religious settings both progressive and conservative. And he is really funny, too.
Peterson will be appearing in the sanctuary of the La Verne Church of the Brethren on Friday night, April 26, beginning at 7 pm. There is no cost for admission. The event is being sponsored by the Envisioning Commission; and a free-will offering will help support Peterson’s ongoing work.
“Peterson Toscano’s work combines astute readings of the Bible with great story-telling and comedy. He offers interpretations of the texts and insights that even experienced biblical scholars haven’t seen before. When portrayed by Toscano, Bible stories and characters come to life with wit, sympathy, and humor.” Dale Martin, Ph.D, Woolsey Professor of Religious Studies, Yale University. Author of Sex and the Single Savior and Pedagogy of the Bible
Childcare will be provided. Subject matter may not be appropriate for younger children.
