Children's Sunday School Returns January 8, 2012

Using the Children Learn What They Read series, Sunday school-aged children aged Pre-K through 5th grade will be exploring God's presence in the following stories:

January

8 - The Story of Ruby Bridges by Robert Coles

15 - In God's Name by Sandy Eisenberg Sasso

22 - When I was Young In The Mountains by Cynthia Rylant

29 - Grandad's Prayers For The Earth by Douglas Wood

January Fireside Conversations

9:15 – 10:10 a.m.

Fireside room

Continuing the Work of Jesus, Peacefully, Simply, Together is the tagline of your denomination and is the theme of the 2012 Annual Conference. We know that many congregations "on the Right" don't discuss or strongly support this statement, and we want to see how we really feel about it. Therefore, we will study this theme in January. Leaders will be announced but we really want everyone to be part of these discussions.

Below is a tentative schedule of topics:

January 2012

8 - What is the work of Jesus, and how do we continue that work today?

15 - Peacefully

22 - Simply

28 - Together

Friendship Class Pursues Holy Family into Egypt

9:15 - 10:10 a.m.

Social Hall

During the first part of January, the Friendship Class will look Janus-like into the early story of Jesus. We will look back into the Biblical account of Jesus' birth, but focus on what the Bible says happened in the month/years(?) after the birth: the Magi, the warning angel, the slaughter of the infant males, and the flight into Egypt. The story is gruesome and sketchy, but it has been elaborated for two millennia.

WABS - Wednesday Afternoon Book Study
January 11, 2012 (Second Wednesday of the Month)
4:00 p.m.
Church Library

We will discuss the novel, Someone Knows My Name, by Lawrence Hill. The heroine is fictional, but the historical setting is accurate. Aminata is kidnapped from West Africa and brought to the colony of South Carolina in the 1700's. Her life and legacy are movingly told in this fact-based, amazing story. All are welcome.

Taizé Prayer Service
February 26, 2012
6:00 - 6:45 p.m., East Room

Taizé is a meditative prayer service that incorporates simple, repetitive song and chant, scripture readings, and periods of group silence in a setting of peace and soft light that fosters communion with God. Through Taizé, participants can worship in a community setting, yet remain open to the voice of God and discover the prayer within themselves. Services will be offered by Sharyn Webb and Lori Dick.

Spiritual Cinema Circle
January 31, 2012 6:30 pm

Fireside Room

The January Spiritual Cinema Circle will feature the fascinating cross-cultural love story Sabah. There's a lot of humor in this film, but it's much more than a comedy. It's a frank look at the difficulties, pitfalls, errors, and yet ultimately, the potential joys of immigration, duty, tradition, and love. This is really a movie worth seeing; and we'll begin the evening with a terrific short subject that some would say is a fantasy of foreign affairs and diplomacy. Join your friends in the Fireside Room on Tuesday, January 31 at 6:30 p.m. for an entertaining, yet thought-provoking evening.

"If another member of the church sins against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone. If the member listens to you, you have regained that one. But if you are not listened to, take one or two others along with you, so that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses." Matthew 18:15-20
