Commissions

Every church has some kind of structure to help it accomplish its mission.  The La Verne Church of the Brethren has a Church Board and Commission structure.

Every church has some kind of structure to help it accomplish its mission.  The La Verne Church of the Brethren has a Church Board and Commission structure.  Through the work of eight commissions, who report to a Church Board consisting of the chairs of the eight commissions and church officers,  we strive to continue the work of Jesus:  peacefully, simply, together.

Commission Descriptions

Gifts Discernment Commission
This committee distributes a gifts and talent inventory to the congregation and tabulates results, maintains member profiles, and serves as a consultant to church leadership by securing persons for various ministries and positions.

Program Commissions

Spiritual Life and Nurture
This commission assists the congregation in deepening its spiritual life through the worship experience, fellowship and other programming with the focus on creating a hospitable environment for visitors and new people.

Christian Education
This commission is responsible for envisioning, planning, and directing of the total educational program of the church.  They recommend curricula materials, provide training for teachers and leaders, plan and coordinate camping experiences, retreats, and intergenerational events.

Service
This commission is responsible for challenging the congregation into lives of service by interpreting and coordinating local, national and/or international service opportunities.

Peace and Justice
This commission calls the congregation to acts of peace and justice in relationship to the people and creatures of the earth and their environment, near and far, including interpreting our peace witness, coordinating response toward local, national and international disasters, and promoting action against unjust issues.

Management Commissions

Personnel
This commission receives and considers all concerns relating to staff and personnel of the church.  It reviews tenure and terms of employment, appoints a search committee when needed, and ensures that policies regarding hiring and termination are upheld.

Property
This commission is responsible for the maintenance of church grounds and buildings. They maintain adequate insurance and establish guidelines for safety and use of the facilities.

Stewardship and Finance
This commission is responsible for promoting good stewardship and handling monies for the congregation.  Some of their duties include assembly and presentation of an itemized budget to Church Board and receiving, recording and distributing funds through the Church Treasurer.

Envisioning
This commission assumes responsibility for receiving, facilitating, and directing new ideas, ministries, or programs.  They provide leadership to the church for strategic planning.
